After reading mostly negative comments about the 2d20 system on forums, I previously delved into the 2d20 Conan and was pleasantly surprised and my players love the system.
In my experience, its charms only emerge in practical implementation. Additionally, success beyond what's required for task completion provides 'momentum points' which can be spent by the PC or pooled for the party to use in succeeding at other tasks that are All in all it provides a fun toolbox for flexibility in telling the story. There is an obvious trend towards 'nuanced' rules systems where there is a narrative collaboration between PCs and GMs to interpret the often complex roll outcomes that they allow Fantasy Flight's Star Wars is another good example.
